Anodes

An anode is a sacrificial block of either zinc or aluminum alloy that is mounted on, or connected to, the underwater metal parts of your boat, such as, stern drives, shafts, propellers, rudders, trim tabs and skin fittings. Anodes come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

How does a marine anode work?
The electrons that make up that current are supplied by one of the metals giving up bits of itself, in the form of metal ions to the seawater. This is called galvanic corrosion and, left unchecked, it quickly destroys underwater metals. This piece of metal is called a sacrificial anode, and most often it is zinc.
